Local Area Information

Pickering is the gateway town to the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. The area is a popular destination all year round for walkers and cyclists.

Pickering is famous for its medieval castle and the home of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. A trip to Whitby in a vintage carriage pulled by a steam engine through the dramatic moors countryside is not to be missed.

You will find plenty of places to eat and drink, with a fine selection of independent pubs, cafes, restaurants and bistros to choose from.  The Sun Inn, Pickering, has won CAMRA's Rural Pub of the Year numerous times along with Rural Cider Pub of the Year and has been a runner up to Yorkshire Regional Pub of the Year.  There are numerous other pubs in Pickering in easy walking distance some of which serve great food and some have live music.

Dalby Forest (6 miles) in the North York Moors National Park, has walking and cycling trails, play areas, BBQ and picnic sites, bike hire and the Go Ape tree top adventure attraction.

It is a short drive to spectacular coastline, with its beaches and coastal destinations of Whitby, Scarborough, Filey, Staithes, Robin Hood's Bay and Saltburn.

We are also close to historic York, with its Minster, Roman Wall and cobbled streets.

Food lovers will want to visit Malton - Yorkshire's food capital, just a 15 minute drive away. It hosts traditional food shops, artisan producers, restaurants a cookery school, food tours, markets and festivals.
